Sunshine and Vitamin D: What Actually Works, and What Does Not

Few questions come up as often in bone health as the one about sunshine. People want to know whether they can skip the supplement if they just get outside more, and whether the vitamin D they make in the sun is somehow better than what comes in a capsule. These are good questions, and the honest answers are more interesting than a simple yes or no. So let me walk through the ones I hear most, one at a time.

A quick word on why this matters for your bones. Vitamin D is what lets your body absorb the calcium you eat. Without enough of it, even a calcium-rich diet cannot do its job, and your bones pay the price. That is why getting your vitamin D right sits near the center of any real plan for osteoporosis.

Is Sun-Made Vitamin D Different From a Supplement?

The vitamin D your skin makes in sunlight and the vitamin D3 in a good supplement end up as the very same molecule in your body. And if that is not practical or comfortable for you, a supplement does the same job dependably.

What Else Does Daily Sunshine Do for Me?

This is my favorite part, because it is where sunlight quietly outshines any pill. Vitamin D is only one of the good things that happen when sun meets skin.

When sunlight touches your skin, it releases a small molecule called nitric oxide into your circulation, and nitric oxide relaxes and widens your blood vessels. In careful studies, this gently lowered blood pressure, entirely separately from vitamin D, a line of research led by dermatologist Dr. Richard Weller and colleagues and reported by the University of Southampton. Morning light does something different and just as valuable.
